Line Movement & Closing Line Value
Why the number moves, and the one stat that predicts long-term profit.
A line is a living price. It opens, then moves as money, news, and time arrive.
What moves a line
- Sharp money — professional bettors hitting a number hard, often early.
- Public money — recreational bets piling onto favorites and overs.
- News — injuries, starting pitchers, weather, lineup scratches.
When a lot of tickets land on one side but the price moves the other way, that's a tell: sharper money is on the quiet side. You can watch that split live on our public betting charts — ticket % vs money %, and how the line moved over the last 1–24 hours.
Closing Line Value (CLV)
The closing line is the market's last, sharpest price. Closing Line Value is the gap between the price you got and that close. Consistently beating the close is the best long-run predictor of winning — better than your short-term win/loss record, which is mostly variance.
Beat the close by shopping early for soft numbers and by reading where the smart money is going before the public catches up.
