Key numbers rule
Margins cluster on 3 and 7 (field goals and touchdowns), with 10 and 14 next. That makes the half-point huge: -2.5 vs -3.5 straddles the single most common result. Never give up a half-point around a key number without value elsewhere.
What moves the line
- Quarterback injuries — the biggest swing in sports betting; an elite QB out can move a spread 5–7 points.
- Weather — wind/rain/snow hit totals more than spreads.
- Public money — floods favorites and overs on marquee teams, which sharps fade.
Timing
Openers post Sunday night for the next week. Bet early to grab soft numbers, or wait until Friday for full injury reports — both are valid. Track where the market is leaning on our NFL public betting chart, shop the number with line shopping, and measure closing line value.
