Public vs Sharp Action
How to tell the crowd from the pros — and why it matters.
Not all money is equal. "Public" (square) money is small, recreational, and biased toward favorites, overs, and popular teams. "Sharp" money is larger, disciplined, and often early.
Reading the two
The tell is the gap between tickets (count of bets) and handle (dollars). When a side has lots of tickets but little money, that's the public piling in small. When a side has few tickets but most of the money, that's sharps betting big against the crowd.
Reverse line movement
The classic signal: a line moves toward the side with fewer tickets. If 75% of bets are on the favorite yet the favorite's price gets better for you, sharp money is hitting the other side and the book is respecting it.
Using it well
